Sorghum Meal

What it is.
Sorghum is an ancient whole grain naturally gluten-free and rich in nutrients. Our Sorghum Meal is made from locally sourced sorghum, milled to yield a fine meal that can be used much like maize meal or other staples in Nigerian diets.

Nutritional Profile & Health Benefits
- A 100-gram portion of uncooked whole-grain sorghum delivers roughly 330 calories, ~72 g carbohydrates, 7 g fiber, 11 g protein, plus healthy amounts of minerals like magnesium, phosphorus, manganese, copper, and B-vitamins.
- High fiber content supports digestion, helps regulate bowel movements, and may assist in lowering blood cholesterol.
- Contains antioxidant compounds and phenolics that help fight oxidative stress and inflammation.
- Because it is a slow-digesting complex carbohydrate (low to moderate glycemic response), it helps sustain energy levels and avoid blood sugar spikes.
- Great for heart health due to minerals like potassium and magnesium, plus fiber which helps reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol.

How to Use It
- Cooked like a porridge or pap for breakfast.
- Used in staple meals (e.g., as a substitute for maize or rice).
- Can be mixed into soups and stews for added nutrition.
- Ground sorghum meal can also be used for baking (bread, cakes) especially for those looking for gluten-free alternatives.

What Makes It Special for BNL’s Customers
- Locally sourced — supports Nigerian agriculture, reduces import dependence.
- Affordable staple for families — high nutrient per cost ratio.
- Versatile — fits into traditional Nigerian diets and modern health-oriented diets.
